The incumbent performs duties as a lead medical supply technician in the decontamination section of the Sterile Processing Service at Central Texas Health Care System, Austin OPC, Texas. Incumbent is responsible to his/her supervisor for ensuring that the work assignments of the other employees of the team are carried out by performing the following duties:

  • Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee has enough work to keep busy.
  • Keep in touch with the status and progress of work, and make day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly.
  • Estimate and report on expected time of completion of work, and maintain records of work accomplishments and time expended and prepare production reports as requested.
  • Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies.
  • Give on the job training to new employees in accordance with establish procedures and practices.
  • Direct operation for receiving, disassemble and inspection of damage reusable medical/surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Will determine and direct decontamination staff in the correct use method for decontamination of medical instruments.
  • Responsibilities include decontamination of devices such as complex medical equipment, surgical drills, orthopedic trays.
  • Visually examines items to ensure contamination has been removed.
  • Will perform routine inspections of dirty rooms and transportation of contaminated items to ensure compliancy to policies and procedures.
  • Conducts orientation for new staff as well as training sessions for all staff.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: *Sterile Processing Experience Preferred* * Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: experience directly related to the position to be filled and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience as lead medical sterile supply technician or supervisory in medical sterile supply processing and distribution. In addition, experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing and issuing sterile and unsterile medical/surgical supplies and equipment; experience that required knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics and operating conditions of medical/surgical supply items ; experience that required knowledge of decontamination, cleaning , preparation, collection of soiled supplies, use of disinfectants, decontamination of all materials, supplies and instruments for steam or gas sterilization; experience that required knowledge of aseptic techniques, and experience in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners and steam sterilizers. OR, * Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one (1) years of graduate education or a master's degree with courses related to the occupation such as medical supply processing, storage and distribution, sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED). Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:The employee performs a majority of work standing or walking with some kneeling, crouching, and reaching. In addition, the employee regularly pushes loaded carts weighing several hundred pounds, aligns them on tracks in sterilizers and must walk and pull delivery carts up inclines and over rises. There is a frequent requirement for lifting baskets of stainless steel instruments weighing 25 pounds from floor level to chest level and occasional requirements for similarly lifting baskets weighing 40 pounds. MUST BE ABLE TO WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT.
